Alcoholic Spouse? Is it Truly Alcoholism?
Do you get confused somtimes about what distinguishes frequent drinking from alcoholism? After all, your husband or wife can drink often and not seem drunk. What does that mean? Maybe your spouse only drinks on week-ends or every day after work. You assume they are drinking to unwind at end of the day. Looking back, you realize your spouse used to have only an occasional drink at a social occasion. So-are you married to an alcoholic husband or alcoholic wife?
Here are some 7 questions to help assess if you are married to an alcoholic spouse:
1. Anything over 14 drinks a week for men or 7 drinks a week for women is considered excessive drinking (CAGE criteria).
2. Can your spouse stop drinking alcohol after one or two drinks or not?
3. Is your spouse drinking every day or does your spouse “binge drink” on week-ends?
4. Is your spouse having trouble taking care of daily responsibilities? Have you had to pick up the slack to keep things running smoothly?
5. Has your spouse suffered any physical consequences from drinking such as liver trouble, heart problems, pancreatitis, seizures, black-outs?
6. Does it take more alcohol to make your spouse tipsy or drunk?
