Are You Trapped In Your Marriage To An Alcoholic Spouse?

trapped Are You Trapped In Your Marriage To An Alcoholic Spouse? Some people that are married to an alcoholic spouse will tell me that they are trapped. They explain that their alcoholic husband or alcoholic wife will fall apart without them and can’t take care of themselves. The truth is that the alcoholic may not “make it” on their own in their present state. When push comes to shove and there is no one to take care of them, some alcoholics actually choose recovery and quit drinking.

Being an alcoholic spouse’s caretaker makes it easy for the person to continue drinking. Without a caretaker’s help, (you), it would be much harder to be an addict. Are you a caretaker to your alcoholic husband or alcoholic wife?

Here are 5 examples of codependent behavior:1. Paying all the bills. You are the “responsible one”. I know women who hold 2 jobs to support their kids and an alcoholic husband who can’t hold down a job.

2. You lie for your spouse to their boss, your own relatives, friends, and even your kids to cover up for their excessive drinking.

3. You threaten to leave if they break another promise to quit drinking, but yet you either stay or choose to go back to your alcoholic spouse because you feel so terrible without them.

4. You bail your alcoholic spouse out of jail for a DUI.

5. You have accepted the role of supermom or super-dad and take care of everything. You have become hyper-responsible about every chore, every errand, every event for your kids to compensate for the inadequacy of your alcoholic husband or alcoholic wife.

Alcoholism is considered a family disease. Every one in the family is impacted. If you can get help to stop codependent behaviors, your alcoholic spouse will feel the consequences of addiction. The consequences of alcoholism can be brutal and often are the tipping point for an alcoholic spouse to get help.
