Can Your Alcoholic Spouse Go One Day Without Drinking?
Are you married to an alcoholic spouse? Have you noticed that your alcoholic husband or alcoholic wife can go without alcohol for a day or two, maybe even a week after you have a fight over their excessive drinking? Quitting drinking gets your hopes up only to be dashed by the predictable relapse. What is the root of the problem?
Here are 4 reasons for this cycle of quitting drinking followed by relapse:
1. Your alcoholic spouse is in denial that they have a problem with excessive drinking. Your spouse actually believes that going one or two days wthout drinking alcohol means that alcohol does not control them.
2. Your alcoholic spouse’s brain has become dependent on alcohol. Your spouse starts to experience symptoms of alcohol withdrawal such as tremulousness, insomnia, or stomach problems that drive relapse behavior.
3. Your alcoholic husband or alcoholic wife is using alcohol to cope with life’s daily stresses. They do not know how to cope without this crutch.
4. Your alcoholic spouse may think of alcoholics as homeless, poor people who have lost their job, their family, their home. Your spouse cannot identify himself as an alcoholic because he is still able to function (i.e. functioning alcoholic).
Your alcoholic spouse’s ability to skip drinking for a short period contributes to serious denial that an alcohol problem exists. The ability to hold a job, not lose their marriage, or lose their house reinforces this denial.
Stop rescuing your alcoholic spouse! When your spouse suffers the consequences of addiction, denial is broken. That’s when true healing for both of you begins.
