Does Your Alcoholic Spouse Use Alcohol To Cope?
Does your alcoholic husband or alcoholic wife use alcohol to cope with stress? Would your alcoholic spouse admit this? Probably not. As a psychiatrist treating addiction, I see this scenario often. A spouse drinks a beer to relax after work, but over time the amount of beer increases to 6 or more. This is warning sign number one (it takes more alcohol to get the same effect) of a drinking problem.
Here are 4 other warning signs to look out for that signal the possibility your spouse has a problem with excessive drinking:
1. You notice that your spouse drinks evey single day. Early on in your marriage, it was the occasional beer or glass of wine. You have noticed that NO days are skipped.
2. Your spouse used to be a lot more active and engaged in the family. Now your spouse mainly seems interested in drinking and sitting on the couch.
3. You and your spouse used to have a good sex life. Drinking a lot and on a frequent basis hurts sex drive and performance.
4. Your spouse gets extremely defensive if you confront them about their excessive drinking. It is obvious to you that your spouse has no plans to stop drinking alcohol.
Being married to an alcoholic husband or alcoholic wife is fraught with problems. Excessive drinking tends to creep up on someone gradually. Your alcoholic spouse has relied on alcohol to relieve tension instead of using healthy coping skills to deal with life’s challenges. Your spouse does not want to stop drinking alcohol because they are most likely used to self-medicating their stress.
